Winter Went Out With A Whimper

By Artur Ciesielski | Essay

Sitting in the garden under the parasol to protect my head from the heat of the sun a glimpse of yellow peaked from behind the white sheath. One, two then a few yellow flower on the Palo Verde. These sole little flowers foreshadow the wondrous symphony to come.

Winter went out with a whimper in Phoenix. A few sole days of freezing in December and a day low in the mid 50’s was the extent of it. In January instead of the average of mid 60’s we got a premium of 10+ degrees, with a few days flirting with the 80’s.

It’s not wonder that the flora is confused. On one week you see the brown leaves falling en masse covering the street, clinking as the car and bike wheels crumple them to bits. It’s lovely. The next week new leaves, new shoots,  no rest.

It’s unlikely to get colder. January passes in a few days and the averages in February are higher. Winter is gone, it never really came.

And, soon, as the few little flowers indicate the glory of spring will begin. When it does these trees will be covered in millions of these beautiful yellow flowers and the bees and birds and other bugs will show, buzz, sing in amazing voices and sounds for months.
