A Few Hours In Łódz

By Artur Ciesielski | Photography

I was, possibly, going to go to Lodz after returning from Zurich, but Lukasz suggested a trip there on my visit this last weekend, so we went. It was really just a short trip. It took 90 minutes to go one way and we had about 5 hours to see a few thing this city had to offer before returning so I can catch the express train back to Krakow.

W parked at Manufaktura just before it opened. This is, now, a shopping, entertainment and museum destination and just a nice place to walk around.

Before that is used to be “…a textile factory founded by Izrael Poznański in mid 19th century. In the times of its past glory the factory produced million of metres of cotton material.

The industrial empire of Poznanski was a self-sufficient district which included the owner’s residence, factory, workers housing complex, church and a hospital. Today Manufaktura is located in these historic buildings.” [from the museum website].

The stores I don’t care about, though they are a necessity, but the buildings are exceptionally beautiful and well restored.

Lodz is also know for street art. We only saw a few change murals covering multi story buildings. Most were beautiful and interesting. It would be worth visiting Lodz just to see these.

Below are a few photos of old kamienice or building of the type you see below. I forget their English name. Many are amazing, some can be once restored. All are along Piotrowska street, one of the longest if not the longest main streets in a Polish city. It also seems to be a destination point with lots of restaurants, shops, pubs and ice cream cafes.  I only took a few photos of the buildings: you’ll fine Art Deco, Gothic – Classical Revival and other styles
